What Should You be Looking for in an Older Man Cologne?
Most people don’t realize this, but many colognes and perfumes have their own identity, and they could also reflect invisible impressions and messages from the wearer. When you are older, you need to give an image of maturity and wisdom.
Can you do that with something like cologne and perfume? Yes, you can. With a carefully selected cologne that suits your age and situation, you can do wonders!
There are some guidelines you could follow that can help you with your choices, such as:
- Colognes for older men shouldn’t be sweet and playful. You could give the wrong signals of an irresponsible person who is not reliable and is not taking his life seriously.
- One of the perks of being an older man is experience, so it’s good to reflect some sense of expertise in your choices when choosing a cologne.
- When you are older, you can have the luxury of choosing some bolder choices in colognes and perfumes, as long as it’s something creative and mature.
- You can also be more adventurous in your choices and step into new territories in cologne and perfume.
However, you have to keep in mind that these are all just general guidelines and are not rigid and restricted rules to follow. Fragrances and colognes are subjective, and the only rule is that you can wear what you want, whenever you want; the choice is yours.
Best Colognes for Older Men
When choosing a new cologne, you will be overwhelmed by the vast and neverending releases of colognes and perfumes in the market today. There are, of course, some usual suspects that everybody knows and could perfectly suit an older man, such as:
- Polo by Ralph Lauren
- Paco Rabanne Pour Homme
- Aramis by Aramis
- Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche
- Lapidus Pour Homme by Ted Lapidus
Those are all great choices, but honestly, they are outdated, and there are more modern and better colognes in the market. My list will contain an updated version if you want to be different, unique, and stand out from the crowd.
These colognes will give you an edge over the others and above all, you will enjoy wearing them yourself. So without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the best colognes for older men that you can buy.
Bentley for Men Intense – Bentley
Bentley for Men Intense is a fantastic boozy and leathery scent, and as it’s often described in the fragrance community ” A NICH QUALITY SCENT AT A CHEAP PRICE.” The opening is strong and may put some people off, with strong Rum and spices accords.
After the initial phase, it becomes more leathery and woody with some faint booze and incense in the background. This cologne is like a real gentleman in a suit or a cologne that James Bond could wear!
The performance of this fragrance is excellent, with incredible longevity and projection. As for the seasons, this cologne is more suited to the colder weather due to its heavy components.
Updated Note: The fragrance has been reformulated recently, and unfortunately, the performance is no longer beastly like before. Make sure to try it before you buy it if you can.
- Seasons: Fall and Winter.
- Notes: Black Pepper, Bay Leaf, Bergamo, Rum, Woody Notes, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, African Geranium, Incense, Leather, Benzoin, Patchouli, and Cedar.
Bvlgari Man In Black – Bvlgari
Man In Black is one of the best colognes from the house of Bvlgari. This cologne has substantial similarity to Spicebomb from Viktor & Rolf, but Man In Black is considered a more mature version of Spicebomb.
It opens up with a lot of spices and a Rum accord. After it dries down, the Rum will calm down, and you will end up with Tobacco and Tonka combination and leather, with a fair amount of spiciness.
The downside here is the above-average performance compared to Spicebomb, which lends itself nicely to be a short evening cologne or a romantic scent in general.
- Seasons: Fall and Winter.
- Notes: Spices, Rum, Tobacco, Leather, Iris, Tuberose, Tonka Bean, Guaiac Wood, and Benzoin.
Bogart Pour Homme – Jacques Bogart
This cologne is considered a modern classic. It starts with a heavy dose of Lavender and a Cherry Tobacco smell with some freshness, although there is no Cherry or Tobacco on the official note breakdown.
After it dries down, the Tonka Bean will enter the stage accompanied by the Lavender and some spices, and Vanilla, which gives it a warm and cozy vibe.
Bogart Pour Homme has some similarities to A*Men Pure Havane by Mugler but at a much more affordable price. The performance is fantastic, and it could last for a long time on your skin, which makes it a better bang for your buck.
- Seasons: Fall, Winter, and Early Spring.
- Notes: Lavender, Bergamot, Orange Blossom, Rose, Lily-of-the-Valley, Tonka Bean, Patchouli, Cedar, Oakmoss, and Musk.
Azzaro Pour Homme Intense (2015) – Azzaro
There are two versions of this cologne, an older version from 1992 and this one. Azzaro Pour Homme Intense (2015) is a modern and updated version that makes it less old-schoolish and more mass-appealing than the original.
The cologne starts with a boozy kick from the Brandy with some spiciness from the added Cinnamon, and when it dries down, it becomes more of an Amber-Tonka combination with spiciness.
You could still feel some traces of the original Azzaro Pour Homme in the background, but the general vibe you will get from this cologne is a warm and spicy smell with some masculine sexiness.
Azzaro Pour Homme Intense is a moderate performer with above-average longevity and projection. Still, it’s better to be that way, or you will run the risk of being obnoxious or irritating to people around you.
- Seasons: Fall and Winter.
- Notes: Cinnamon, Brandy, Haitian Vetiver, Amber, and Tonka Bean.
Guerlain Homme Eau de Parfum (2016) – Guerlain
This cologne was previously called Guerlain Homme Intense, but it’s recently repackaged into the new Guerlain bottles with a slightly different name, but the scent is basically the same.
Guerlain Homme has a fresh and green opening from the Lime and Mint with a prominent Rum accord. The Rum will accompany the scent till the dry-down, giving its famous Mojito vibe.
This cologne is mature and fun at the same time, and it perfectly suits the warmer weather. Guerlain Homme is also pleasant and inoffensive, making it a good choice for casual wear. The performance is good, with decent longevity and moderate projection.
- Seasons: Spring and Summer.
- Notes: Spicy Mint, Lime, Rum, Floral Notes, Vetiver, Cedar, and Patchouli.
Gentleman Eau de Parfum – Givenchy
Gentleman Eau de Parfum is Givenchy’s take on the popular Iris colognes for men. It has a lot of similarities to two of the most famous Iris colognes on the market, Dior Homme Intense, and Valentino Uomo Intense.
Gentleman Eau de Parfum has a more wearable interpretation of the three colognes, with a more masculine take. It doesn’t have the makeup-y feel that Dior Homme Intense has or the playfulness of Valentino Uomo Intense.
It starts with Iris and pepper combination. It then develops into spicy, woody Vanilla with some sweetness from the Tonka Bean and Benzoin. This cologne also feels somewhat balsamic and resinous.
As for the performance, it’s excellent, with great, long-lasting power and strong projection in the first few hours. The nature and composition of this cologne make it a fantastic choice for colder months.
- Seasons: Fall and Winter.
- Notes: Black Pepper, Lavender, Bergamot, Orris, Cloves, Cinnamon, Black Vanilla Husk, Tolu Balsam, Patchouli, Tonka Bean, and Benzoin.
London for Men – Burberry
Burberry’s house doesn’t have many popular colognes for men, but this cologne is one of their finest creations. It opens up with Cinnamon and pepper paired with a touch of Lavender and citrus.
After the initial phase, the leather comes into play with a Port Wine accord and Tobacco. The scent is warm and inviting, and as many have stated before, it has a Christmassy vibe.
The performance, unfortunately, is moderate with average projection and longevity. However, you will be using this cologne primarily for indoor situations and family gatherings, so you don’t need a strong performer anyway.
- Seasons: Fall and Winter.
- Notes: Cinnamon, Lavender, Bergamot, Leather, Mimosa, Tobacco Leaf, Opoponax, Guaiac Wood, and Oakmoss.
Jaipur Homme – Boucheron [EDP]
Jaipur Homme is one of the best oriental spicy colognes in this price range. When you first spray the cologne, you will be hit with a high dose of spices and citruses.
After it settles down, the citruses will disappear. It becomes an exotic and comforting scent simultaneously, with various notes like Cinnamon, Vanilla, Nutmeg, and some Woodsy Notes that give a wonderful powdery and cozy trail.
As you would expect, the performance is tremendous, with hours of projecting hard from your skin till the next day!
Important Note: This review is for the Eau de Parfum version. There is an Eau de Toilette version with basically the same scent but with a slightly lighter composition, so keep that in mind.
- Seasons: Fall and Winter.
- Notes: Lemon Verbena, Lemon, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Vanilla, and Woodsy Notes.
Acqua di Gio Profumo – Giorgio Armani
We all know the original Acqua di Gio. It’s one of the most iconic men’s colognes in modern history and one of the best-selling to this date. However, it became the enemy of its own success. The scent DNA is played out through the years and has lost its charm.
In an attempt to revive the success of the original Acqua di Gio, Giorgio Armani has released its rightful successor, Acqua di Gio Profumo.
The cologne becomes an instant hit and is critically acclaimed as one of the market’s best colognes. It’s a more mature version of the original with the added Incense and Patchouli.
Acqua di Gio Profumo has the same aquatic vibe with a heavier base, making it more versatile throughout the seasons and enhancing its lasting power.
While the original Acqua di Gio is more suited to younger men, this cologne will fit almost any age, from a teenager to an older man, without any problem, and is a “Signature Scent” worthy.
- Seasons: All-Year-Round.
- Notes: Sea Notes, Bergamot, Rosemary, Sage, Geranium, Incense, and Patchouli.
Terre d’Hermes – Hermès
Terre d’Hermes is the most well-known cologne from Hermès and has already become a modern classic. The opening has the infamous dirty orange smell, which can be off-putting for some.
When the cologne hits the dry-down, the Vetiver will come to the front as the leading player, backed with woods and a slight sweetness from the Benzoin, and of course, the brilliant orange accord.
Terre d’Hermes is an elegant, masculine, and classy scent. However, due to its artistic nature, it’s not for everyone. For a citrus-based scent, it performs great with excellent longevity and a heavy projection in the first couple of hours.
One last thing about this cologne is that it is a “Signature Scent” contender and can be used all year round.
- Seasons: All-Year-Round.
- Notes: Orange, Grapefruit, Pepper, Pelargonium, Vetiver, Cedar, Patchouli, and Benzoin.
